Amateur Baseball: Bird Island wins 11C play-in game

EDEN VALLEY — Bird Island started off a great weekend for the Cornbelt League by upending St. Nicholas 6-4 in a play-in game for the Region 11C tournament.

Milroy later beat Watkins 4-1 to give the Cornbelt two wild-card teams in the region tournament that starts next Saturday in Eden Valley. Raymond and Sacred Heart had already secured spots by advancing to the Cornbelt final.

Bird Island, the Cornbelt’s No. 3 seed, will meet the Cold Spring Rockies, the No. 1 seed from the Central Valley North, at 11 a.m.

The Bullfrogs never trailed St. Nicholas, al though the Nicks of the Central Valley South did tie the game at 2-2.

Luke Kramer knocked in Dylan Gass and Shawn Dollerschell with a triple in the first for the Bullfrogs. The Nicks plated two runs in the fourth before Bird Island pulled ahead in the sixth.

Kramer and Alex Gay singled to start out the sixth and a fielding error from a Jeremy Mortensen groundball allowed Kramer to score. Gay later scored on Jesse Bjur’s fielder’s choice and Mark Neubauer followed with a double to bring in Mortensen. Neubauer added insurance with an RBI single in the eighth.

Bjur worked the first 62/3 innings to benefit from the offense and collect the win. Bjur struck out seven, walked three and gave up four runs and eight hits. Brad Gass then pitched perfect ball to get the final seven outs and a save.
